Excellence in Research and Education Award

Paulette Sansone, Ph.D., LMSW
Director
Schervier Center for Research in Geriatric Care
Bon Secours New York Health System/Schervier Nursing Care Center
Riverdale, N.Y.

Dr. Paulette Sansone has been a principal investigator of many research projects focusing on dementia, resident decision making, advance directives and palliative care. Through her efforts, the Schervier Center for Research in Geriatric Care has received numerous foundation and government grants for important research. She has published articles based on her research in prestigious journals. In addition, she was co–founder and co–director of the New York City Long–Term Care Ethics Network, which became a statewide effort under the auspices of the New York Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. Her leadership of a groundbreaking study of palliative care helped to bring palliative care issues to the forefront of elder care. Findings from that study were published as a guidebook in 2004 and distributed to all New York nursing homes.

The Schervier Center, which Dr. Sansone directs, provides customized education and training to health care professionals and paraprofessionals in a variety of settings. Under her leadership, the Schervier Center adheres to the mission of conducting groundbreaking research, developing innovative programs, hosting conferences to promote education and collaboration among those serving the elderly, and providing consultation and technical assistance to others in the field. Most recently through her efforts, the Schervier Center has secured funding for an electronic medical record system, an oral nourishment project, various community garden partnerships, and a major dementia care conference. Paulette Sansone's work reflects her recognition of the critical importance of research in improving the quality of life for older adults.
