Implementing Quality First Successfully

Initial QF Stages for Kansas Nursing Home

Name: KJ Langlais
Title: Executive Director
Organization: Friends of Johnson County Nursing Center, Inc. (Nursing Home)

What was the "spark" that got your organization involved in QF?
I would say first it was the Kansas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (KAHSA) and their information and reading about it, and second that as an organization it represents everything we are committed to and want to be about, therefore we needed to put our efforts in the same directions.

Where/how did you learn about QF?
KAHSA programs and newsletters, and from John Grace

Describe the process of getting your Board's support for QF.
I sent them out handouts and presented it to the Board meeting. They wanted more information before they would sign, so I downloaded the presentation information that was on AAHSA's website, and put it in a PowerPoint for the next Board meeting.

What has been the role of the following with Quality First in your organization? Have they...
(a) been informed about Quality First?
(b) completed the Self-Study?
(c) reviewed Self-Study results?
(d) had a role in implementing Quality First?
(e) other role?

CEO/ADMINISTRATOR — Lead to communicate the QF initiative
MANAGEMENT STAFF — Committed every day in the work that they do
OTHER STAFF — Not specific, but the goals are the same
GOVERNING BOARD — Yes, they do a self-study each year
RESIDENTS/CLIENTS — QF was presented to the Family Council in the beginning, however probably needs to be talked about again

If your organization completed the QF Self-Study, was it helpful?
Yes in that it gave me something to measure us by, realize how far we had come, but also look at where we needed to still make improvements.

What has been the most beneficial aspect of QF for your organization?
We are participating in something we are committed to for the sake of respecting AAHSA and KAHSA and our own commitment which aligns with the QF standards of practice. And we support the QF principles.
