	Keep the Pressure on for a 2009 Medicare Update Next year's Medicare payment update for skilled nursing facilities and home health care is still in question. Now's the time to tell Congress not to offset the cost of the physician payment relief by cutting or eliminating the vital funds you and your residents and clients deserve. 	Apply for Leadership AAHSA by May 15   There are just 3 days left to apply for Leadership AAHSA. Help Us Prevent Medicaid Cuts   The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued seven rules which would reduce federal Medicaid funding by a total of over $17 billion. A federal cut of this magnitude inevitably would result in state Medicaid cutbacks, which could put reimbursements to long-term care providers on the chopping block. Apply Now for Senior Housing Funding   Fiscal year 2008 grants now are available for Section 202 housing and for assisted living conversion programs. Applications are due July 3 for assisted living conversion and July 10 for Section 202. At this time, no posting is available for service coordinator funds, nor do we expect one. New HCBS Report Now Available   AAHSA's May Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) report features information on new falls prevention legislation and Real Choice Systems Change grants. AAHSA Opposes Attempt to Cut Medicare Payments to Hospices   CMS issued a proposed rule to update the hospice wage index that could result in reduced Medicare payments to hospices in fiscal 2009. Support the Caring for an Aging America Act   The bill, S. 2708, would implement many of our Institute for the Future of Aging Services' (IFAS) recommendations to help you recruit and retain qualified staff. Take Advantage of Upcoming Congressional Recess   Your members of Congress will be at home the week of May 25 for the Memorial Day recess. This is a great opportunity for you to visit with them in their local offices and/or to invite them to your Homecoming events. Pathways to Greatness Applications are Due May 15   There's just six days left to apply for AAHSA and LarsonAllen LLP's "Pathways to Greatness" Recognition Program. All multiple level aging-services providers that are AAHSA Quality First Covenant signers are encouraged to apply by May 15. Selected organizations will be recognized at AAHSA's 2008 Annual Meeting & Exposition and will have the opportunity to share their knowledge with our Leadership Circle. Contact: Lee Barbeau, (267) 419-1171 New Legislation Would Fund Gulf Coast Senior Housing   Senators from Louisiana and Mississippi recently introduced the Gulf Coast Multifamily and Assisted Housing Recovery Act, S. 2975, which would provide $125 million for affordable senior housing in the area. Recognize Your Rising Nurse Leader   Applications are now available for IFAS' Joan Anne McHugh Award for Leadership in Long-term Care Nursing. This award is given to a nurse who provides excellent clinical care while demonstrating leadership and a commitment to long-term care nursing. DME Competitive Bidding Criticized at House Hearing   CMS's impending durable medical equipment (DME) competitive bidding program came under fire at a House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee hearing last week. A number of DME suppliers predicted that it will drive many companies out of business and hurt product innovation because prices will be set too low to justify research and development.
