Capitol Hill Hears from You
After meeting to discuss issues including long-term care financing and Home and Community-Based Services program expansion, AAHSA members from Oregon pose for a photo with Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.).

Sporting buttons with the number of community members they represent, hundreds of AAHSA members spoke with one voice on Capitol Hill during last week's Future of Aging Services Conference. They lobbied for adequate federal funding for seniors' health care, housing and services and urged federal legislators to support technology applications as well as AAHSA's plan to transform the way Americans pay for long-term care. Congratulations on this outstanding turnout, especially to new participants. We will be following up with the legislators and staff members you met, so please don't forget to return your Capitol Hill visit reports and photos.

If you weren't able to come to Washington, you still have an important role to play in our advocacy efforts. Congress will be making major budget and funding decisions in the next few weeks. Contact your legislators to urge their support for aging services. Contact: Louise Maus, (202) 508-9487.

arrow New CMS Guidance Will Increase HCBS Availability
To implement provisions enacted two years ago, CMS has clarified its regulations that guide states in offering home and community-bases services through a needs-based state plan amendment rather than having to apply for a Medicaid waiver. The new flexibility applies to Medicaid recipients who have incomes no greater than 150 percent of the federal poverty level, or $15,600 per individual in 2008. This proposed rule change would provide easier access to person-centered care.

Reason You Work In Aging Services:
I like working with the residents. I really enjoy taking care of people.

Biggest challenge:
My biggest challenge was when my daughter Hannah had cancer in 2000, while she was just in Kindergarten. It was a shock to me because my younger brother had just passed away from cancer within the last 6 months. The fear of losing Hannah and trying to care for my three other children as a single mother was a challenge. I had recently been in a car accident prior to my daughter's diagnosis. Staying strong and positive during this time was probably my biggest life challenge. I was diagnosed with cancer in 2005, but knew my daughter survived, so I would be able to as well.

Retreat:
Fishing, camping, knitting and Church-related activities
