Largest-ever Annual Meeting Closes With Charge to "Live Your Story"
Last Wednesday, AAHSA closed its Annual Meeting & Exposition with a grand finale featuring Jerry Friedman, an award-winning photographer whose book Earth's Elders offers a glimpse into the hearts and minds of the 62 oldest people on earth through his camera lens. A free Webcast of the closing general session is available for viewing for the next two weeks. The session featured some of the children attending the Annual Meeting and a performance by New York Repertory Company High School for Theatre Arts, the high school featured in the movie Fame.

California Providers Opens Hearts, Doors for Wildfire Victims
In an immediate and extraordinary response to the devastating wildfires in California, the state's senior living communities are sharing their facilities, staff, food and other vital resources with fellow senior-care providers and their residents who have been directly affected. Aging Services of California, our California affiliate, continues to track the emergency response and will coordinate ongoing support for residents and staff. St. Paul's Senior Homes and Services, Hillcrest, Air Force Village West, The Episcopal Home Communities and Southern California Presbyterian Homes, among many others, have accepted evacuated residents and provided staff support to help other AAHSA members in need. Once immediate needs have been met, Aging Services and its members intend to provide ongoing aid in the recovery process for both residents and personnel. Contact: Stuart Greenbaum, (916) 932-1268.

Senate-Passed Bill Continues User Fees; Act Now to End Them
Under the Health and Human Services spending bill passed by the Senate last week, user fees on nursing home survey revisits would continue at least through the end of September 2008. The House version of the bill contained specific provisions to end the fees. We must persuade members of the House and Senate who will write the final version of the legislation to include the House provisions, not the Senate's. Contact: Marsha Greenfield, (202) 508-9488.

Help Us Fight for More Service Coordinator Grants in 2008 Earlier this month, HUD awarded 22 new service coordinator funding competition grants for the fiscal 2007 year. Unfortunately, unless service coordinator program funding increases, very few new grants will be available in fiscal year 2008. Please contact your members of Congress to make sure this valuable program receives the funding it deserves. Contact: Colleen Bloom, (202) 508-9483.
