AAHSA Member Outlines Quality Long-Term Care for Senate Committee
Bonnie Zabel, administrator at Marquardt Memorial Manor in Watertown, Wisc., testified on our behalf at last week's Senate Special Committee on Aging hearing on "Nursing Home Transparency and Improvement." Her testimony focused on problems that can develop when a hospital patient is discharged to a nursing home with little time to explore options or compare quality among nursing homes. She recommended that protections and information should be available to consumers and their families to stop these problems before they start. Her testimony also discussed the many quality improvement initiatives that she and other AAHSA members have spearheaded. Contact: Marsha Greenfield, (202) 508-9488.

Help Us Save Senior Housing/Aging Services Funding for 2008; End User Fees
With the 2008 fiscal year well underway, Congress has been unable to pass the spending bills that cover Section 202 senior housing, Section 8, Older Americans Act home- and community-based services programs and federal nurse education and training programs. Legislation that would have ended the user fee on nursing home survey revisits also has been vetoed. These measures now will be rolled into one large spending bill which Congress expects to pass the first or second week of December. All of us have worked very hard this year for the funding levels that were in the earlier spending bills, and for conference report language that would have ended the nursing home survey revisit user fee. Congress will cut some of the spending that was in earlier bills to make the total more acceptable to the President, and we must make sure that the cuts do not come in programs serving seniors. Contact: Peter Notarstefano (202) 508-9406 on home and community-based services funding;, Nancy Libson, (202) 508-9477 or Alayna Waldrum(202) 508-9476 on senior housing funding. Please Urge your legislators to maintain previous funding levels for programs that serve seniors.
