Chris Matthews More than 900 AAHSA members heard political pundit Chris Matthews give his thoughts on bringing aging services issues "inside the Beltway" at this morning's opening general session of our Future of Aging Services Conference. The members are in Washington this week to learn how innovation meeting action will help them create the future of aging services. Tomorrow, they'll head to Capitol Hill to tell your legislators what they can do to help them on this journey, and Wednesday they'll learn how to move forward in harnessing technology's power to transform aging. You can still register on site for this unrivaled shared learning and advocacy opportunity. Simply go to the atrium of the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. Registration will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Contact: (202) 745-2138.

Senate Budget Committee Calls for Unspecified Medicare Cuts
In writing up the first draft of the fiscal 2008 budget plan, the Senate Budget Committee rejected the Medicaid cuts proposed by President Bush, but did allow for $15 billion in Medicare cuts to health care providers over the next five years. The budget resolution did not specify how these cuts would be achieved, although there has been discussion of reducing the Medicare subsidy to managed care plans. We expect a Senate floor vote on the budget plan this week, when the House Budget Committee will also begin its work on the fiscal 2008 budget. It is critically important that you continue communicating with your legislators on the need to maintain and enhance funding for Medicare and other aging services programs. AAHSA Needs Your Feedback for LEP Requirement Resources
To help you comply with the new LEP guidance, we are working with translation companies to offer you senior housing model leases, other core documents and generic information for residents in additional languages. In order to do this, we need to determine which senior LEP population cohorts are most prevalent in members' individual building(s), and/or five percent or 1000 in your community market area(s), and which documents or common type notifications to translate. If you would like to be part of a short-term focus group on this issue, please let us know. Contact: Colleen Bloom, (202) 508-9483.

Security Legislation Addresses Seniors' Emergency Evacuation Needs
Legislation just passed by the Senate, S. 4, includes an amendment Senator Herb Kohl (D-Wisc.) made that requires public transportation workers to be trained in the evacuation needs of seniors in the event of a public emergency. When he introduced the amendment, Senator Kohl pointed out that 71 percent of those who died during and after Hurricane Katrina were over the age of 60. We had made a number of recommendations to Congress on better coordinating the evacuation of seniors during public emergencies in the aftermath of the hurricane.
