This Week's Top News:

Fight for Senior Housing Funding Continues
Last year, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved an increase in affordable housing funding for the 2007 fiscal year. Those same legislators are finalizing that budget right now. Help us make sure they keep their promise. Send a letter to your legislator urging them to tell the story of senior housing's value in their districts. Together, we will ensure that all seniors will have a place to call home. Contact: Nancy Libson, (202) 508-9447, or Alayna Waldrum, (202) 508-9476.

New AAHSA Report Helps You Plan for the Future
Watch your mailboxes for your copy of our latest scenario planning exercise, The Long and Winding Road: Histories of Aging and Aging Services 2006-16. AAHSA developed this resource to help you envision what the next ten years may hold for your organization and our field. It also explores the two key uncertainties we face, expanding consumer expectations and the availability of talented people, and offers ways that your organization can confront these challenges head on. Contact: Sarah McVeigh, (202) 508-9459.

On Jan. 18, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) published the general section to the Super Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA). The general section includes preliminary information that applicants need to apply for 2007 HUD funding. Once HUD's budget is in place, the agency will publish the Super NOFA's individual program sections as well as a revised Appendix A that includes all 2007 SuperNOFA programs, the funding available for them and due dates for applying. Congregational Outreach Materials Now Available
Our new congregational outreach toolkit features tools like a care planning questionnaire and sermon notes that you can share with religious congregations in your community or use to lead an information session about this topic. AAHSA's Faith Based Cabinet, which includes representatives from the major religious denominations our members represent, created the toolkit to help you educate people about the importance of planning and saving for the continuum of aging services available to them. Please let us know how you use these materials and what response you receive from these important community institutions and the individuals who support them. Contact: Lauren Shaham, (202) 508-1219.

AAHSA Advocates for Relief on HUD's LEP Guidance
In its soon-to-be published Limited-English-Proficiency (LEP) guidance, HUD still places responsibility on housing owners to translate "core documents" into other languages and provide oral interpretation on demand. To help you meet this requirement, we are urging your legislators to require HUD to specify which documents are subject to the LEP requirement, provide standard translations of those documents as well as oral interpretation services through a central hotline. Contact: Colleen Bloom, (202) 508-9483 or Alayna Waldrum, (202) 508-9476.

U.S. Supreme Court to Hear Home Care Overtime Case
Many of you have added companionship to the services you offer, and increasing numbers of consumers are requesting this service. In late April, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear Long Island Care at Home, et al. v. Coke and could reinstate a regulation that exempts "companionship services" from federal overtime payment obligations. We expect that the court will issue its decision in June, and we will inform you of any changes that might impact the services you provide. Contact: Peter Notarstefano, (202) 508-9406.
