Get A Mentor
A core element in bringing new leaders into the management of Aging Services is the training of Fellows (students) by preceptors/mentors. These preceptors/mentors are leaders (CEO's) in the aging services field who have taken responsibility to train graduate and post-graduate students.. All of the organizations they represent are considered very prestigious in the field; and most have been training students for many years.
While there is no accepted standard for this training some preceptors have developed a written plan and some tailor a program for the specific trainee.
Programs generally rotate students through most of the sections of the organization. The preceptor also assigns projects for the Fellow that will help the organization as well as help the student develop his or her own style. Most have regular meetings with the student for coaching and are available as needed. Assignments allow the Fellow to begin applying theory to develop their managerial skills.
For many Fellows, the relationship with the preceptor will last many years. The preceptor/mentor is someone to call when help is needed, for example, when a situation arises that has never been experienced and alternate solutions, approaches or processes are needed.
Experience indicates that at the end of the training some Fellows are offered positions with these organizations. Others usually find positions before they finish the training.
Priority placement is provided to those students from our affiliated universities.
